Why veterinarians consult me

A specialist sounding board for high-stakes reproductive cases

Dr Emmanuel Fontaine, DVM, Diplomate ECAR

Reproduction and neonatology sit at the edge of general practice. The cases are time-sensitive, the margins are small, and the breeder is watching closely. I am a board-certified specialist in animal reproduction (Diplomate of the European College of Animal Reproduction) with nearly two decades focused on this work across dogs and cats, and I support attending veterinarians who want a specialist to think through a case with them.

Confidence on the hard calls

Think through ovulation timing, C-section planning, dystocia triage, or a fading neonate with a specialist before you commit to a path.

Keep the case in your practice

Get specialist input without referring the case away. You stay the attending veterinarian and keep the client relationship.

Stronger breeder conversations

Clear reasoning and protocols you can take back to demanding breeder clients with authority and calm.

How it works

A clear, professional process

1

Submit your request

Send a short summary of the case or topic, your country and jurisdiction, the species, urgency, and what type of support you need.

2

Scope confirmation

I confirm whether this is the right format and clarify the scope of the consult before any fees apply.

3

Formal consulting

Support may be provided as written input, a focused call, a longer case review, a protocol review, or a clinic and team training session.

4

You remain the attending veterinarian

You remain responsible for the VCPR, diagnosis, treatment decisions, prescriptions, medical records, client communication, and follow-up care.

Professional courtesy

Quick questions and formal consulting

I am always happy to point colleagues toward general educational resources when possible. For case-specific input, protocol review, or detailed clinical discussion, I offer formal vet-to-vet consulting.

If the question requires reviewing a specific case, discussing clinical decisions, analyzing a protocol, or providing detailed recommendations, it belongs inside a formal consulting structure.

Consulting formats

Matched to the request

Each consult is delivered in the format that fits the question and its complexity.

Focused Written Input

For a specific question, protocol, or case detail that can be addressed in writing.

Vet-to-Vet Call

For focused clinical discussion with the attending veterinarian.

Complex Case or Protocol Review

For more detailed situations involving fertility, pregnancy, neonatal care, kennel or cattery protocols, or recurring problems.

Clinic or Team Training

For practices that want structured education on canine and feline reproduction, neonatal care, breeder communication, or protocol implementation.

Custom Advisory Support

For organizations, clinics, or professional partners needing more ongoing specialist input.

Fees

Vet-to-vet consulting is a paid professional service. Fees are shared after I confirm the scope, format, urgency, and jurisdiction of the request.

This allows each request to be matched with the right level of support, whether it is a focused written review, a case discussion, a protocol review, or a clinic training session.

Common questions

Before you reach out

Do you take over my case?
No. You remain the attending veterinarian throughout. I provide specialist input and clinical reasoning. You keep the veterinarian-client-patient relationship, the diagnosis, treatment decisions, prescriptions, and the medical record.
Can you consult across borders?
I provide specialist and educational input to you as a colleague. You apply that input within your own jurisdiction, under your own license and regulations. When you reach out, include your country and license jurisdiction so I can confirm the right scope.
Will you speak with my client directly?
No. I support you, the veterinarian. Client communication stays with you. Where it helps, I can give you clear language and protocols to use in your own conversations with breeder clients.
Is this an emergency service?
No. This is scheduled specialist consulting. If a patient requires urgent care, follow the appropriate emergency procedures in your jurisdiction.
What does it cost?
Fees depend on the scope, format, urgency, and jurisdiction of the request, and are shared once I confirm the right format. Each request is matched to the appropriate level of support rather than a single fixed rate.
What if it is just a quick question?
I am glad to point colleagues to general educational resources where I can. Anything that requires reviewing a specific case, discussing clinical decisions, or analyzing a protocol belongs inside a formal consult.
